67th Entry, July 19th, 2017

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I think this is turning into the best summer ever! On Monday morning, I received an envelope with my name on it and nothing else. When I opened it, to my surprise, I found 4 tickets to the Museum of Natural History, a Starbucks gift card, and a lovely thank you note! I realized that it was all from the photographer from Juilliard’s Club Benefit the week before! Before the benefit started, he realized that he forgot his key to lock up his equipment, so I made arrangements with the security guards so he could safely lock his belongings in a storage room. He was so thankful that I helped him, he said he’d leave me a little something! Turns out that he’s the Principal Photographer at the Museum of Natural History! Don’t let anyone tell you differently; New Yorkers are kind and generous!

I’ve settled in nicely in the Development Office at Juilliard. I pinch myself when I sit down at the desk every day; I sit in front of a glorious window that overlooks all of Lincoln Center! I see The Metropolitan Opera, New York City Ballet, and Avery Fischer Hall!

On Thursday, I was invited by my mentor, the head of communications at Juilliard, to the Apple Store in SoHo for a panel discussion about the newly released Juilliard Open Studios app! Here’s the blurb that was on the invitation-

“Join Charles Yang, virtuoso violinist and Juilliard alumnus, for performances and discussion with Marcelo Gomes, principal dancer for American Ballet Theater, Dr. Joseph Polisi, President of The Juilliard School, and Sam Aspinall, CEO of Touchpress. The Juilliard Open Studios app invites you inside The Juilliard School—offering unprecedented insight into the artistic process and a chance to witness leading professionals working with the next generation of outstanding performers.”

It was incredible to see the finished product. The company that created the app, Touchpress, had been filming students around the school for nearly two months! There will be new episodes released monthly. You can get an exclusive behind closed doors look at what Juilliard students in all divisions are up to in classes, rehearsals, master classes, and performances. It’s a great opportunity to see all of the hard work that goes on before the public gets to see the finished product in performance! Check out the link to the Apple Store below. Until next time, I’ll keep you updated with the latest from this Juilliard student!
